The Masters 2020

The eighth edition of The Masters was held in the Marshall Arena in Milton Keynes from January 31 to February 2. Defending champion Michael van Gerwen surprisingly loses 10-6 against Jonny Clayton from Wales in the first round. This gave world champion Peter Wright the opportunity to win his second Major of the year. In an exciting final the Scot defeated Michael Smith 11-10.

Wright started the tournament with a 10-7 win over Joe Cullen. In the second round he whitewashed Dave Chisnall 10-0. Wright reached the final by defeating fellow countryman Gary Anderson (11-7). Smith was too strong for Austrian ace Mensur Suljovic (10-6), Adrian Lewis (10-6) and debutant Nathan Aspinall (11-10) in his road to the final.

The final seemed to go in the direction of Wright, as the Scot took a 5-2 and 7-4 lead. However, Smith fought back, came alongside and even forced a deciding eleventh leg. In the final leg he got three match darts, but 'Bully Boy' missed. Wright did throw his double and won The Masters for the first time in his career.

The highest average of the tournament was for Wright. In his first round against Cullen, 'Snakebite' threw an average of 103.55. Other players who scored a 100+ average were Anderson and Smith.
